Bells Theater Renovation

The City of Bells selected TLM to perform renovations to the existing Bells Theater, originally built in 1936. This project included keeping historical elements from the original building while updating the facility to meet current codes and create energy efficiency with updated mechanical and electrical components, as well as new insulation. The exterior of the building was very well maintained, but the interior was left in decay and had to be completely renovated. While the demolition of some of the existing foundations and sidewalk took place, exterior walls were strengthened with structural bracing. The building next door was demolitioned as well.

Inside, the facility was completely gutted, including all existing interior finishes and materials. Existing floors and framing were removed for a redesign. The stage and mezzanine were redesigned to accommodate the current load while using the space of the original design. The abatement of hazardous materials was needed to rid the facility of mold and asbestos. New electrical services were designed to include LED lighting and occupancy sensors, plus a new HVAC system was installed to reduce energy costs. Wall sconces and balcony seating were all reused from the original facility to preserve the historic beauty. The new design also incorporated ADA compliant restrooms in the main lobby of the theater.

This project was partially funded with the help of several grants. TLM assisted in the grant application processes.
